A local organization providing homes for some disabled veterans will hold a dedication ceremony this week.
Lubbock Homes for Heroes will dedicate a home in the Bacon Crest subdivision to go to Specialist Louis Flores, a local war hero, on Wednesday, February 1st at 11 a.m.
The keynote speaker for the event will be retired Surgeon General of the U.S. Army Dr. Bernard Mittemeyer, who also serves as chief of urological surgery at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.
Specialist Flores served as a medic in northern Iraq and was involved in multiple IED explosions, in addition to helping those wounded in suicide bombing incidents. After his return, Flores, a Plainview native, was diagnosed with a moderate brain injury and had difficulty dealing with the trauma he encountered during his service while continuing his studies at Texas Tech.
A flag flown over the U.S. Capitol on September 11th, 2011 will be presented to Flores, and State Representatives John Frullo, Jim Landtroop, and Charles Perry will present a resolution honoring the Flores family.
The house has been built and donated by local builders and subcontractors of the West Texas Home Builders Association, in partnership with Texas Tech Athletics. The home will also be on view for this June’s Parade of Homes.
